Energy-Efficient Resolutions For Your Home

If your electrical system is long overdue for a little (or a lot) of TLC, you’ve got your friends at Staley Electric in your corner to help you plan for your home’s most energy-efficient year yet.

Not sure where to start? Try these tips for a smarter, safer home!

Update exposed outlets to GFCI. If you’ve got standard outlets installed in moisture-prone areas (such as the ones outside your home and in the bathroom), this is a quick fix that is also incredibly important for your safety. These special outlets dramatically decrease the risk of electrical shock, and today’s electrical code actually requires them to be installed or upgraded in such areas. Don’t forget to reset them monthly to make sure that your GFCI outlets are operating correctly! If you experience problems with your outlets or need outlet repair, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

Upgrade your light bulbs. Not using LED lights? This simple, do-it-yourself improvement decreases energy consumption and lowers your electrical bill. LED bulbs are initially more expensive, but they last nearly 50 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. You’ll be especially grateful during the summer months, as they also emit less heat. They’re safer, too; you’re at a lower risk of an electrical fire, and they’re less likely to shatter.

Use surge protectors. Power surges and lightning strikes happen, and your most valuable electronics and appliances are definitely at risk if you’re not using surge protectors. For added protection, consider a whole-home surge protector device wired to your home’s electric box. They’re not cheap, but they’re far less expensive than a new computer.

Replace your batteries. If you haven’t swapped out the ones in your smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, get this done as soon as possible. This should be done, at minimum, once per year. If you haven’t updated the detectors themselves in several years, now is the time. The latest models are more reliable and more energy-efficient than ever!

Get in a routine. Turn off lights when you leave a room. Unplug “vampire” appliances that continue to use electricity when you’re not using them, especially if you’re leaving town. A few common-sense measures can dramatically decrease your energy consumption and help regulate your home’s temperature in the upcoming warmer months, too.

How to Hire the Right Electrician

How to Hire the Right Electrician

Are you needing an outlet repair or a dimmer installation? When you hire an electrician you want to make sure to get the job done right. Finding the best person to get the job done can be a hassle, but when you ask the right questions it can save you time and money, and you can find an electrician you can trust.

Ask to see a proof of insurance and a license. Make sure your contractor’s license and proof of insurance are up to date and ask what their insurance policy covers in the case that something happens.

What previous work has the contractor done? Ask for a list of references from previous jobs so that you can check out past work the contractor has done.

What kind of specialized jobs have they completed? Some electrical jobs are more complicated than others. If you have a job that needs more work than your typical outlet repair, make sure your contractor is right for the job.

Do they provide 24/7 support? Electrical problems can arise at any minute. Being able to talk to someone and resolve the problem or to schedule at any time is important.

Get an estimate. Ask for a quote for each project you have as well as parts and labor. Get the terms of your job in writing so that you and the contractor both understand what is expected of the job and the price.
