“Spring” into Action: Electrical Safety Tips for Spring Cleaning

Electrical safety sign

Every year, when spring comes around, many households set out to do a little spring cleaning. What they may not prioritize, however, is any necessary electrical “cleaning” to decrease safety hazards at home.

With that said, there are several things you can do on your own to check for electrical safety. Here are some of our top suggestions to implement within your home.

Inspect Your Cords & Plugs

In order to prevent electrocution, electrical fires, and other safety hazards, it is best to check your cords and plugs regularly. This includes ensuring there are no frays or exposed wiring where there should not be. Any signs of damage are a red flag and should not go ignored. If damaged, it is best to replace them with new ones that work with your electrical wiring.

Note: Ensure all cords do not pose a threat as a tripping hazard.

Address The Clutter

Your extension cords and power strips should not be overworked. Try not plug too many items into one strip, but rather split up how many items are plugged into each extension cord within the room. That way, you can effectively reduce the chances of a fire hazard, and it does not compromise the integrity of your electrical wiring throughout the home.

Tangled cords are another cause for safety concerns. When this happens, it can weaken the equipment, lead to damaged or frayed cords, and ultimately, a possible fire hazard. The best thing to do is to have cords neatly organized with appropriate clips or ties, so they are out of the way and can not intermingle with one another.

Misplaced Cords

Sometimes, the outlets may not be laid out in the most suitable places for your appliances. Certainly, extension cords provide a temporary alternative solution, but it is not recommended to use them long-term. If you have inconveniently located electrical outlets, having a licensed electrician come out is a great idea! An electrician can review your home’s electrical wiring and offer upgrade opportunities. For the Little Rock, Arkansas area, our team has you covered!
